Abstract
676,541. Frequency modulation. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. Oct. 24, 1949 [Oct. 27, 1948], No. 27247/49. Class 40 (v). In a radio receiver in which amplitude modulation is eliminated by a process of detection and negative feed-back as in Specification 659,598, the circuit is so modified as to permit of the use of a diode detector with an earthed cathode and with a single output filter from which both the feed-back voltage and the normal A.V.C voltage can be derived. The incoming F.M. wave is passed through the usual amplifying stage 1 and further frequency-changing or other stages (not shown) to an amplifier 2 having two control grids 14, 15. The output circuit 18 is connected to a diode 3 and load filter 4 across which detected A.M. is fed to the inner grid 15 of the valve 2, and A.V.C. voltage is fed through a smoothing circuit 22 to the control grid of the valve 1. The detected A.M. is amplified in the screen-grid circuit and fed with reversed phase from the impedance 7 through a condenser 8 to the outer control grid 14 of the same valve 2. The valve 2 is operated under such bias conditions that the A.M. modulates the wave passing through that valve in a negative or inverse sense, and so substantially annuls the unwanted A.M., as explained in the specification with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The H.F. feed may be to the grid 15 and the A.M. feed to the grid 14; and the A.M. may be amplified in the anode circuit instead of the screen circuit.
