Abstract
676,494. Desulphurizing coke. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Aug. 23, 1950 [Sept. 17, 1949; Sept. 17, 1949], No. 20879/50. Class 55 (i). Petroleum coke with a reduced sulphur content, which enables it to be used for metallurgical processes &c., is prepared by rapidly heating the coke to between 2500‹ and 3200‹ F. and holding it at this temperature long enough to effect the desired reduction in sulphur content. The process may be intermittent or continuous. In the former, see Fig. 1, a batch of the coke in a vessel 12 is heated by the combustion of preheated fuel gas and air admitted through pipes 13 and 14, the air being in slight excess so that additional heat is generated by partial combustion of the charge. The discharge gases passing through an outlet 15 carry off a proportion of the sulphur, the batch being removed through a valve 16 when the sulphur content has fallen below 2 per cent, this taking between “ and 6 hours depending on the particle size and the source of the coke. In the continuous process, see Fig. 2, particulate coke is fed through an inlet 11 to a desulphurizing vessel 10 and is heated therein either by hot combustion gases or by partial combustion with air which enters through a pipe 13. The sulphur containing gases discharge through an outlet 12. The desulphurized coke is withdrawn continuously through a water-jacketed outlet 16, part being drawn off through a branch 16<SP>1</SP> to store whilst the remainder passes through a valve 17<SP>1</SP> into a coking drum 19 into which the preheated residual oil or crude oil which is to be converted into coke is sprayed, through an inlet 20. The oil carbonizes on the hot coke particles which are withdrawn, when sufficiently coated with fresh coke, through an outlet 24 on to a screen 25, the coarser particles being withdrawn through an outlet 27 for crushing prior to recycling whilst the finer coke is elevated directly through line 29 to the inlet 11 of the desulphurizer.
