675,928. Mounting instruments and steering wheel on vehicles. BARENYI, B. Oct. 25, 1950 [Feb. 25, 1949; Oct. 28, 1949], No. 26071/50. Classes 79(iii) and 79(v) A motor vehicle instrument panel is supported by the steering column between the planes of the rim and hub of the steering wheel, the rim and hub being axially spaced, the instruments being disposed within the surface generated by a spoke when the steering wheel is rotated, the spoke making an acute angle with the steering column. As shown, the steering column 5 terminates with a hub 6 having a single spoke 8 carrying the steering wheel rim 9. Projecting from the steering column is a stationary tube 12 which carries a circular panel with instruments 11 and, if desired, a horn ring 18. Connections to the instruments pass down the supporting tube and the instruments are enclosed by a two-part cover 19 hinged to the spoke 8, or by a cover hinged to the instrument panel. The panel may be arranged with its top inclined towards the front of the vehicle. The spoke may be resilient and the steering wheel may be hinged thereto at 10 to facilitate access to the instruments. More than one spoke may be provided.
