Abstract
674,632. Annealing. BIRLEC, Ltd., and SCHULTE, F. W. K. April 5, 1950 [Jan. 5, 1949], No. 245/49. Class 72 [Also in Group XII] In a method of heat-treating metal goods, the work pieces are passed continuously through a treatment chamber supplied with a circulating gas heated to a temperature in excess of that to which the work pieces are to be heated, at such a speed that they do not even locally overheat despite the relatively high temperature of the circulating gas. As shown, applied to the annealing of aluminium sheet or discs, the articles are conveyed by an endless belt 10 through a shallow treating chamber. A fan 8 draws air from one end 6 of the chamber and discharges it, through a heater 7, into the other end, the temperature of the air being controlled by a thermocouple 17, and the speed of the air by a thermocouple 18 at the fan inlet. The air may be supplied to the chamber at 700- 800‹C. and removed from the chamber at 100-300‹C. below the entry temperature, the speed of the conveyer being such that the work pieces are discharged at 450‹C. The time of treatment may be 1-3 minutes per millimetre thickness of metal. The work pieces may be removed in the direction of flow of the air or in the opposite direction.
