Abstract

1322599 Heat treatment of surface-coated articles ELECTROLUX AB 9 Sept 1970 [9 Sept 1969 7 Oct 1969] 43099/70 Heading F4G Wooden articles (e.g. panels) coated with paint, lacquer or putty, are subjected to successive surface heat treatments at temperatures between 100‹ and 300‹ C. (e.g. 150-225‹ C.), the articles between each heat treatment being maintained in an atmosphere below 50‹ C. for an interval of time long enough to maintain the temperature of the base material of the articles below a temperature at which damage to the articles would occur but short enough to ensure that the coating is heated in its entirety. Articles are transported by a conveyer 10 (formed of spaced sections arranged end-to-end, and of variable speed) through a pre-heating oven 11, a coating chamber, a low-temperature setting oven 13, a low-temperature (below 60‹ C.) drying oven 14, high temperature (between 100‹ and 300‹ C.) drying ovens 15-19 separated by cool zones (at less than 50‹ C.), a cooling zone 20, and a surface-finisher 21. A base coating may be applied to the articles on the conveyer 10, and a covering coating applied to the articles on a similar conveyer arranged end-toend with or at the side of the conveyer 10. The articles remain in the ovens 15-19 for between 5 and 15 seconds. Air may be drawn or blown between the ovens 15-19. The spacings between the ovens 15-19 is adjustable, and is arranged to increase from first to last. Each high-temperature drying oven 15-19 comprises a heat insulated chamber 32 containin g a fan 33 which blows air past electric heaters 36 and through a vaned opening 39 and slots 45 into the drying space 24. The air velocity in the space 24 is maintained at between 15 and 20 m/sec. by means of baffles 47 in the return opening 41 to the fan 33. Some air passes out of the oven inlet 27, and fresh air is drawn in through the oven outlet 28 and through an opening 42. Slidable shutters 29 limit the inlet 27 and outlet 28. Instruments for measuring air temperature and velocity may be introduced through pipes 46.
