Abstract

674,132. Gas turbine plant. LUCAS, Ltd., J. Aug. 17,1950 [Aug. 22, 1949], No. 21713/49. Class 110(iii) [Also in Group XXIX] In a hydraulic speed governor of the kind adapted to control a liquid-operated servomotor e for controlling the fuel supply to a jet propulsion engine, a gas turbine or like prime mover, the servomotor control valve o is actuated by liquid-operable means such as the diaphragm t (or a piston) subject to the pressure in a byepass passage 8, 7, 6, extending from the fuel supply system and containing an adjustable throttle 4 actuated by a dashpot piston 10 responsive to the liquid pressure in the byepass passage, and means are provided to set up a counterpressure in the byepass passage which is related to the speed of the prime mover. The byepass passage is temporarily closed by an isolating valve 14 while the prime mover is being started. As shown the servomotor e controls the inclination of the swashplate d of a multi-cylinder pump as described in Specification 577,016, [Group XXIX], but it may operate a throttle or a byepass valve in the fuel supply. The control valve o is carried by a spring-loaded lever p and actuated through a stem w by the liquid pressure in a chamber s acting on the diaphragm t against a tension spring u. The pump is driven from the prime mover and by means of radial passages y in its rotor a a counter pressure is created in the byepass passage and the chamber s which is related to engine speed. The throttle 4 slides in a cylindrical orifice 5 with tapered grooves. The dashpot piston 10 has a restricted orifice 11 and is loaded by an adjustable tension spring 12. The isolating valve 14 is carried by a diaphragm 16 (or piston) loaded by a compression spring 19 and also by the pump inlet pressure through a pipe- 18. The valve 14 is normally held open by the pump delivery pressure acting through the pipe 8, but remains closed to prevent loss of fuel through the byepass passage while the prime mover is being started. The control valve o responds immediately to a change in the counter pressure and therefore to a change in the speed of the prime mover and at a slower rate determined by the dashpot to changes in the fuel delivery pressure.
