[Also in Group XXXVIII] During subaqueous trenching for cable laying, the cable ship 3 is steered along the line of the cable 1, the course being indicated by air bubbles 64 on the surface, the air being emitted from an aperture in a self-propelled pilot device 61 that is secured to and moves along the cable. Pipes 63 for supplying air and water under pressure are connected between the ship and the device, the water issuing from forwardly directed nozzles therein to clear away a passage in the mud on the sea bed. Specification 673,535 is referred to.
