Abstract

673,478. Jet propulsion plant. McDONNELL AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. April 27, 1950, No. 10380/50. Class 110(iii) A tail pipe comprises a tubular member 1 which terminates in a nozzle 5 and carries hollow members such as louvres 10, and means, such as gearing 17-22, for rotating each hollow member about its longitudinal axis, to provide lateral openings therebetween for the escape of exhaust gases. The louvres are elliptical in cross-section and have reduced ends 11, 12 which are positioned in a diffuser cone 6 and a manifold 13 respectively. The manifold 13 is supported by struts 14 which are secured to the nozzle 5 by a manifold 23. Fuel is fed through the members 23, 14, 13 to the louvres and thence to pipes 24 which are formed in the cone 6 and have discharge ports 25. In a modification, the diffuser cone 6 is stepped and the louvres, which form a continuation of the tail pipe, are rotated through interconnected links disposed around the louvres. The fuel is fed from the louvres to longitudinally extending conduits disposed within the tail pipe.
