Abstract

768,014. Jet propulsion plant. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. March 7, 1955, No. 6599/55. Class 110 (3). A propulsion nozzle comprises a plurality of flaps adjacent the outlet which are adapted for sliding movement in the axial direction to vary the effective area of the outlet. The jet pipe is fitted with an afterburner and comprises inner and outer shells 28, 30. The flaps 38 are strengthened by members 40 and each flap carries two pairs of bosses 46, 48 in which are mounted axles fitted with rollers engaging cam grooves 60, 62 in ribs 34 fixed to the jet pipe and interconnected by a ring member 32. The flaps are joggled so as to make a lap joint between adjacent flaps and contact a sealing ring 42. A bracket 70 on each flap is coupled by a link 84 to a hoop 72 supported on tracks 74 for axial movement by the piston rods 16 of operating cylinders 26. Operation may be controlled manually or automatically, according to whether or not the afterburner is in use, by a control 194 with actuating fluid connections 262, 266 with manifolds 116, 120 connected to the cylinders.
