[Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] Means for effecting axial adjustment of a lathe tailstock or other spindle comprising a toggle device, adapted to be locked and unlocked, having toggle levers in pivotal engagement with the spindle and its support to enable a quick axial adjustment of the spindle to be effected, and a hand-wheel or the like for slow feed adjustment, is characterized' in that the toggle device is rotatable about the spindle axis to engage and disengage a pair of screw-threaded members for locking and unlocking the toggle device respectively. The non-rotatable spindle 2 is slidably keyed within a stationary sleeve 6 secured to a support 1, which may be a lathe tailstock, a fluid-control valve, or other member requiring axial adjustment. The sleeve 6 is provided with an external screw-threaded. portion 7, which may be of non-uniform pitch, and co-operates with internal threads or pegs 12 on a sleeve 11 rotatably secured to a ring 8. The latter is splined on the spindle at 9. A handwheel 3, in screwed engagement with the spindle 2, is rotatably connected to the sleeve by a nut 10. A hand lever 15 is pivotally connected to the sleeve-member 11 and is adapted to move a link 14 of a toggle arrangement 13, 14, the link 13 being pivoted to a ring 16 rotatable about the member 6. By means of this mechanism the spindle 2 may be fed rapidly to the left, Fig. 2, by manipulation of the lever 15 until the threaded members are brought into engagement, the lever 15 and toggle device is then given a partial rotation to engage and lock the threads when the spindle may be given a slow feed by rotation of the hand-wheel 3.
