671.543. Powder metallurgy. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 6, 1950 [Dec. 24, 1949], No. 29883/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (iv). In a method of forming a composite sintered metal article, the main portion and the insert portion are separately compacted, the insert is assembled in an aperture in the main portion and the assembly then sintered. The method is intended more particularly for products in which the main and insert portions have different degrees of shrinkage during sintering, as in the case of an alnico body portion for a permanent magnet with readily machinable soft steel inserts to facilitate fixing. The powders for the different portions are compacted at different pressures so that on sintering both portions shrink to the same extent, for example the alnico body portion may be compacted at 60 tons per square inch and the soft steel inserts at 33 tons per square inch.
