A paper-making machine includes a horizontal press P<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, having a plain upper roll 18 and two suction press rolls 26 and 27 whose diameters are about half that of the roll 18, rotatably mounted on pivoted arms 29 and 36 movable by jacks 32 and 38 to and from the roll 18 to vary the pressures at horizontally aligned nips N<SP>1</SP> and N<SP>2</SP>, a felt 45, which receives the moist paper 46 from the wire 17, being passed through the nip N<SP>1</SP> and around the roll 26, a second felt 52 being trained around the roll 27 and through the nip N<SP>2</SP> so that the paper is carried through the nip N<SP>1</SP>, against the lower periphery of the.roll 18 and then through the nip N<SP>2</SP>. Arms 29 and 36 may be provided at each end of the rolls 26 and 27. The press P<SP>1</SP> may be followed by a press P<SP>2</SP>, Fig. 2, having outer rolls 58 and 57 mounted on rocking arms 60 and 59 and pressed towards a central roll 55, the paper being carried without an open draw from the press P<SP>1</SP> to the press P<SP>2</SP> by the felt 52, being picked therefrom by a felt 81 and carried through the nip N<SP>3</SP> between rolls 58 and 55, which thus act as a reverse press. The paper adheres to the roll 55 and then passes through the nip N<SP>4</SP> between the bare and smooth rolls 55 and 57 which function as a smoothing press.
