Abstract

670,135. Filling-machines. QUAKER OATS CO. Oct. 4, 1949 [Jan. 21, 1949], No. 25479/49. Class 94(i) In a machine for filling bags with granular material comprising means for supporting a bag with its mouth over the discharge end of a feed shoot, a casing in separable parts arranged to be closed around the bag to form a sealed chamber, and means for withdrawing air from the interior of the chamber, the end of the shoot and the upper edge of the casing are provided with co-operating sealing means adapted by closure of the casing to be brought into sealing engagement with the bag therebetween. As shown, a bag B, made of a fabric which is pervious to air, is supported on a tilting cradle 70 with its mouth over the discharge end 10 of a feed shoot 2 to which weighed charges of material are delivered from a scale hopper (not shown). The casing comprises two semi-elliptical or semi-circular shells 20 and 21 pivotally mounted on a shaft 16 and movable between open and closed positions by an air cylinder 51 controlled by pedals 56 and operating through a crosshead 44 and links 40, each shell being filled at its upper end with ribs 26, 27 and a rubber gasket 28 which co-operate with a rib 12 on the shoot to clamp and seal the mouth of the bag, and at its lower end with a rubber gasket 32 which forms a seal with an outlet pipe 34. The shells are also attached to guide rods 60 surrounded by coil springs 66 which cushion their opening movement. The shell 21 is provided with a latch 68 which engages over a lug 69 on the shell 20 to lock the shells in the closed position. The pipe 34 is connected by a pipe' 6 to a suction fan and dust separator.
