Abstract

Procaine-penicillin G is prepared in a form suitable for the extemporaneous preparation of an aqueous suspension, by coating particles of the procaine-penicillin G at least in part with at least one monoaminomonophospholipid, particularly a - and b -lecithin, a - and b -cephalin, partially hydroxtlated lecithin or cephalin, and mixtures thereof in the proportions of 1 to 10 per cent, and preferably 7.4 per cent, by weight. The particle size of the coated procaine-penicillin G is sufficiently small to pass a 60-mesh B.S.S. sieve. According to the example, a partially hydroxylated soyabean lecithin-cephalin monoaminomonophospholipid mixture is dissolved in chloroform, the solution sterilized by filtration through a Leitz filter pad, the sterile solution mixed under sterile conditions with sterile powdered procaine-penicillin G and the coated particles produced by removing the solvent under reduced pressure at a temperature below 50 DEG C., are milled to pass a 60-mesh sieve. The powder may be stored in sterile bottles and, when required, may be suspended in water or normal saline solution by shaking. Other organic solvents boiling below 100 DEG C., such as petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride, may be used in place of the chloroform.
