Class 110(iii), [Also in Group XIII] In a closed circuit gas turbine plant wherein the working medium is heated by a heating container 1 and a heat exchanger 2 which contain a mass of refractory pebbles and communicate at their lower and upper ends respectively with a throat 3 allowing a gravitational flow of pebbles. to the latter, the heat exchanger has an inlet and an outlet communicating with the outlet of a compressor 15 and the inlet of the turbine 14 respectively and means .are provided for burning fuel so that the hot products pass through the heating container and for continuously recirculating the pebbles from the bottom of the heat exchanger to the top of the heating container. The pebbles are heated by fuel burnt in the container 1 or in a combustion chamber 9 which is fed with fuel and air through pipes 10, 11 respectively. The air is supplied by a blower 19 and may be compressed by a turbine unit driven by the gas leaving the container to operate the latter at a pressure equal to or higher than that of the heat exchanger. Alternatively, the gas leaving the container 1 may pass to atmosphere or a heat recovery plant. A valve 5 in the throat 3 is water cooled and rotated by the dropping pebbles or independently driven. The working medium e.g. hydrogen or nitrogen flows in a circuit comprising the turbine 14, a heat exchanger 17 for preheating the air supply to the combustion chamber 19, a water cooler 18, compressor 15, a heat exchanger 16, the member 2 and, if desired, a cyclone prior to re-entering the turbine 14. Ash deposits or pebbles for cleaning may be withdrawn through a valve 22 and clean pebbles introduced at 23.
