Abstract

668,906. Thermionic valves. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 24, 1950 [March 29, 1949], No. 7426/50. Class 39 (i). A device for amplifying or modulating frequencies of 1000 Mc/s. or higher comprises an electric discharge tube, the cathode of which is provided at the interior with a supply of alkaline earth metal compounds and which has at least part of its wall consisting of a homogeneously porous sintered body of one or more of the metals tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, hafnium or niobium, and the pores of the porous body being the largest apertures in the wall, characterized in that the tube is adjusted so that in the absence of signal voltage at least 10 per cent of the saturation current passes the potential minimum between the cathode and control electrode, the spacing between the cathode and control electrode being less than 30 Á. This method of operation reduces the noise and the grid damping. The spacing between cathode and grid may be 17 Á and the static current is preferably at least 20 per cent and may be 30 per cent or even 50 per cent of the saturation current. Specification 641,581 is referred to.
