Abstract

668,568. Engine stopgear. RODICK, A. J., and REBBECK, Sir, F. E. July 2, 1949 No. 17552/49. Class 122(iv). An emergency stopping mechanism for an I.C. engine comprises a stopping device operative directly upon the engine fuel control gear to stop the engine, a locking member arranged to hold said stopping device in a normally inoperative position and electrically controlled means for actuating said locking member to release said stopping device and permit it to move the fuel control gear to the stopping position, said electrically controlled means being under the control of an electrical circuit including switches responsive to faults in the engine services. A rod 8 is slidably mounted in a casing 7 'and connected at one end by an eye 10 to the fuel control lever 35 and at the other end to a piston 12 slidable in a cylinder 13 connected to the air starting valve 40. Adjacent the piston 12 the rod 8 is enlarged at 18 and slides in a bearing 11. The portion 18 is provided with an elongated groove 17 and is engaged by a locking member 16 connected to the core of a solenoid 20. The piston 12 is biassed towards the cylinder head by a spring. The solenoid 20 is controlled by a relay 24 in series with switches 26, 27 operated by faults in the engine and by switches 28, 29 operated by a tappet 30 connected to the rod 8. The switch 29 together with the elongated groove 17 constitutes a time delay device to allow the engine to reach operating conditions on starting up, when air is supplied to the. cylinder 13 and subsequently leaks off allowing the piston 12 to be pushed back until the member 16 engages the end of the slot 17 allowing the switch 29 to close. The electric circuit is controlled by a main switch 38 actuated by the engine starting lever 37. Alarums 41, 42 are also provided in the electrical circuit.
