Abstract
668,217. Lap-forming apparatus. DICK CO., A. B. Nov. 7, 1949, No. 28503/49. Class 120(i) [Also in Group VIII] A felted sheet or lap is formed by collecting successively on a foraminous screen, fibres entrained in separate gas streams through which the screen passes. The fibres are deposited in layers each of which may be laid down on a screen 35 by apparatuses 10, 48, 50 substantially as described in Specification 668,216. The layers may be of differing quality fibres and differing thickness. They may be allowed to interfelt, the upper surface of each layer being roughened, if desired by napping rolls 62, or may be separated by adhesive, resinous or asphalt layers sprayed on by nozzles such as 70. Each layer may be smoothed by rolls such as 65, 66 and the formed sheet may have further layers 58, 60 of paper or other fibrous sheet, coated on the inside with adhesive or barrier material, secured to it after consolidation by rolls 36, 55. Dry or wet binder may be incorporated in the fibres prior to deposition on the screen 35 as by a screw feed device 73 for dry material or a nozzle 71 for wet. When a heavy uniform lap is required, a number of felting heads may be incorporated in a single air circulation system, Fig. 9, the lap being collected on a foraminous cylinder 92 and drawn off by a conveyer 98.
