Abstract

667,217. Universal joints. STOECKICHT, W. G. Sept. 9, 1949 [July 26, 1949], No. 23407/49. Class 80 (ii). The teeth 25, 27 of a coupling having inner and outer members 23, 28 in the form of spur gears are lubricated via passages 35 leading to the roots of the inner set of teeth 25, a continuous centrifugal flow of lubricant over the tooth working surfaces being provided to prevent lodgment of foreign matter therebetween. As shown, applied to a double coupling having a bolted-up intermediate outer sleeve 28, oil supplied via pipes 36, 37 to the internally hollowed rims of driving and driven gears 22, 23 is distributed by the passages 35 and, after flowing across the gear teeth, discharged via bores 38 in the sleeve 28 and via the open ends of the sleeve. Sleeve locating rings 30, 31 which do not interfere with the free flow of the oil are provided. To promote the distribution of oil suitably over the teeth, the tips 39 of the outer teeth 27 may be axially hollowed and bevelled off towards their working flanks, as shown in Figs. 1a and 1b respectively. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the invention is applied to a double tooth coupling having a unitary intermediate sleeve with external gear teeth engaging internal teeth on flanged driving and driven members, the oil being supplied to the interior of the sleeve, into which the oil-distributing passages open, from an annular reservoir which is bolted externally to one flanged member, replenished by a pipe analogous to the pipe 37 and communicates with the sleeve interior via ducts through the corresponding flange. The oil escapes from either end of the gear teeth as before, being led off from the axially outer ends of the teeth by radial ducts through the flanges.
