665,732. Thread-advancing reels. COURTAULDS, Ltd. Sept. 8, 1949 [Sept. 9, 1948], No. 10482/51. Divided out of 665,718, [Group IV(a)] Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii) In a thread-advancing reel assembly comprising a reel 13 formed by two or more members 40, 41 mounted on a driving shaft 15, each reel member having a periphery made up of longitudinal bars which interdigitate to form a substantially cylindrical threadsupporting surface and being mounted on axis that are offset and askew to each other, the drive for the reel shaft includes a speed change mechanism 14 so that, particularly during setting-up, the rotational speed of the reel is adjustable. As shown, the shaft 15 is driven from the shaft 32 through gear change mechanism 39, 35, 36, 30, 31, the gears 35, 31 or 30, 36 being engageable by moving a handle 25 which, at the same time, through a linkage 50, 55, 60, rotates a nest of eccentric sleeves 44, 45 to change the displacement of the axes of the reel members and hence the pitch angle of the thread being advanced; the pitch is greater during setting-up. In modified forms, an infinitely variable change-speed gear may be provided whose range is denoted on a scale 67 and an independent mechanism provided for changing the pitch of the helices, [Group IV (a)], such pitch being indicated on a scale 68.
