664,342. Operating clutches. JOHNSON, H. A. March 23, 1950 [July 14, 1947], No. 18680/47. Class 80 (ii). Control mechanism for the spring-engaged dog clutch of a power press or like machine, such that the clutch normally disengages after one revolution irrespective of release of the control pedal but can when desired be held engaged until the pedal is released, comprises a pair of spring-loaded plungers 5, 22 slidable in a casing 20 and normally connected together by a pivoted catch 31, the plunger 5 carrying at one end a roller 4 normally coacting with a cam projection 17 on the movable clutch member 3 so as to hold the clutch disengaged, and the plunger 22 being connected at the other end by a bell-crank lever 24, 25 to a pedal-actuated rod 19. When the pedal is depressed, the plungers move together to the right to withdraw the roller 4 from member 3 so that the clutch engages. During the course of the ensuing revolution, a cam projection on member 3 coacts with a roller 37 to tilt a spring-loaded lever 34 connected to the catch 31 by a link 35 so as to release plunger 5 which is accordingly returned by its spring into the path of the cam 17, so that the clutch inevitably disengages after one revolution. The lever 34 is pivoted on a crank pin 38 carried by a rotatable disc 45. By turning the latter clockwise by a handle 43, the roller 37 is moved out of the path of its cam and the clutch now remains engaged until the pedal is released.
