Abstract
664,304. Tubular heat-exchangers. SERCKRADIATORS, Ltd., and JONES, T. D. G. E. June 6, 1950 [July 28, 1949], No. 19841/49. Class 64(iii) Relates to heat exchangers comprising a bundle of parallel, straight tubes a extending between end plates b, c and surrounded by a casing d through which a fluid is ,directed in a zig-zag path over the tubes by transverse baffles h spaced axially of the tube bundle, one or more of the baffles being of substantially the same diameter as the casing with a hole in the centre, and the remaining baffles or baffles being solid and of smaller diameter. According to the invention, a thin shell surrounds part of the fluid path between the baffles independently of the casing, the shell being attached at one of its ends to one of the end plates and at its other end to one of the larger baffles so that it encloses at least one of the smaller baffles, an entrance to or exit from said fluid path being provided at one or each of the end plates. In the form shown two thin shells i are provided, each enclosing one of the smaller baffles, one shell being attached at its respective ends to one of the end plates and one of the larger baffles and the other shell being connected between two of the larger baffles, the smaller baffle adiacent the outlet g being unshielded. The outlet g may be arranged in the side of the casing d near the end plate c. The fluid flowing over the tubes may alternatively be admitted at g and discharged at f. The end plate c is slidable in the bore of the casing d to allow relative axial movement between the tube assembly and the casing.
