Abstract

Esters are produced by fully esterifying an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid of 2-28 carbon atoms with one or more ether alcohols in which the sum of the oxygen and carbon atoms is 6-27 and which are prepared by reaction of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol with at least one molar proportion of an alkylene oxide of at least 3 carbon atoms or by an equivalent process. The ether alcohols may be prepared from methyl or isopropyl alcohol and 1, 2 or 3 molar proportions of propylene oxide. They may be esterified with sebacic or adipic acid using such a catalyst as p-toluene sulphonic acid, and a water entrainer such as naphtha, benzene or toluene. Other ether alcohols are prepared from primary, secondary or tertiary alcohols, a number being specified, and propylene, 1,2- or 2,3-butylene or isobutylene oxide. Esterifying acids specified include saturated and unsaturated acids from oxalic up to hexadecane dicarboxylic. The esters are used as lubricants.ALSO:Esters employed as such or with mineral oils as lubricants are produced by fully esterifying an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid of 2-28 carbon atoms with one or more ether alcohols in which the sum of the oxygen and carbon atoms is 6-27 and which are prepared by reaction of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol with at least one molar proportion of alkylene oxide of at least 3 carbon atoms or by an equivalent process. The ether alcohols may be prepared from methyl or isopropyl alcohol and 1, 2 or 3 molar proportions of propylene oxide. They may be esterified with sebacic or adipic acid. Other ether alcohols are prepared from primary, secondary or tertiary alcohols, a number being specified, and propylene, 1, 2- or 2, 3-butylene or isobutylene oxide. Esterifying acids specified include saturated and unsaturated acids from oxalic up to hexadecane dicarboxylic.
