Abstract

A lubricant, for use in the working or machining of light metals such as aluminium and magnesium or a deformable alloy containing at least 70 per cent by weight of one of these metals, contains a boron free metal fluoride and an oxyacid of boron or a salt of such acid. The addition may be to a solid lubricant, a slurry or a wash. The lubricants inhibit or prevent the building up of a coating of aluminium, &c. upon the tools. Ortho, meta, and pyro boric acids and salts such as sodium, potassium, and ammonium tetra borate may be used. The substances are added to an aqueous emulsion containing a substance selected from lubricants and surface active agents preferably wetting agents. Examples of surface active agents are, soap such as monoethanolamine oleate; sulphated aliphatic esters such as turkey red oil; aliphatic sulphates such as sodium oleyl sulphate; complex amino esters such as ester of oleic acid and sodium aminoethyl sulphonate; aliphatic sulphonates such as sodium oleyl sulphonate; alkyl aryl sulphonates such as ceryl benzene sulphonate; cation active compounds such as cetyl pyridinium chloride; and esters and ethers such as glycerol monostearate. Examples of proportions are given and the lubricants are stated to be particularly useful for employment in hot rolling. Specification 655,072 is referred to.
