Abstract
A metal fabricating lubricant especially for use in the cutting and working of light metals such as aluminium and magnesium includes a substance stable under the working conditions and selected from the group consisting of MBF4, MHBF4, RBF4, RHBF4, X.BF3 and X.HF.BF3 where M is an inorganic radicle or ion, R is an organic radicle or ion and X is a substance which, when treated with BF3, will sorb or hold the same. A compound selected from the class consisting of fluorine-free oxyacids of boron and the salts thereof may also be present. The boron- and fluorine-containing compound may be a fluoborate of NH4, K, Na, Li, Cd, Pb, Ba, Cu, Sn, Ni, or Zn, or a reaction product of a fluoborate with an amine such as mono-ethanolamine, tri-ethanolamine or diethylene tri-amine. In p the case of complexes represented by X.HF.BF3 or X.BF3 the carrier substance represented by X is selected with consideration for other properties such as lubrication or wetting. Among such carriers are diethyleneglycol oleate, butyl stearateacetamide, N-hexyl ether, 4,5-dihydro-1,4, diphenyl - 3,5 - phenylamino - 1,2,4 - triazole, pyridine, octyl amine, morpholine, dioxane, aniline, urea, oleic, linoleic or linolic acid, lard oil, polybutene, butyl acetyl ricinoleate, cetyl alcohol, tallow, diethylenetriamine or an oxazoline. When the compound is added to a grease, good results are obtained if the BF3 or BF4 content of the final mixture is above 0.001 per cent by weight. If added to an oil-water emulsion the content must be increased to above 0.01 per cent. In hot rolling the compound is mixed with the coolant or lubricant supplied to the pass. Good results are obtained by adding 0.3 to 1 per cent of NaBF4. The compound may be added to an aqueous emulsion containing from 1 to 10 per cent of at least one substance selected from the class consisting of lubricants and surface active agents, preferably wetting agents. Examples of surface active agents are: monoethanolamine oleate, sodium oleyl sulphate, ester of oleic acid and sodium aminoethyl sulphonate, sodium oleyl sulphonate, ceryl benzene sulphonate, cetyl pyridinium chloride, glycerol monostearate. When an aqueous coolant is used, the preferred compound is an alkaline fluoborate, or zinc, or ethanolamine fluoborate. In extruding, dies and the walls which confine the metal behind the die are lubricated with a heavy oil or grease including the boron and fluorine-containing compound.
