Abstract
662,978. Power take-off devices. HILL, B. E. April 20, 1949, No. 10518/49. Class 79(ii) In a motor vehicle power take-off device an output shaft is connected by splines with a sleeve, the outside of which is engaged by splines with a gear which can engage by means of its splines with a shaft connected with the propeller shaft or can mesh with a gear axially slidable along splines on a power take-off shaft, the arrangement being such that the output shaft can drive the propeller shaft or the power take-off shaft, As shown a gear housing 3 is secured by bolts 5 to the end of the variable speed gear housing H. The output shaft 2 of the variable speed gear has splined to its end the sleeve 10, a roller bearing 11 being disposed between the sleeve 10 and the telescopic shaft 1 coupled by a universal joint J to the propeller shaft D. The sleeve 10 and the shaft 1 are provided with the splines 12, 13 adapted to be engaged by the splines 15 of the slidable gear 14. The gear 14 can mesh with the gear 17 slidably splined on to the power take-off shaft 19 carried in bearings 20 in the housing 3. The gears 14, 17 are engaged by the forked ends of arms 27, 28 which are mounted for movement on guide rods 32, Fig. 3. The ends 30, 31 of the arms are adapted to be engaged by the end of a gear lever 21 pivotally mounted in the top of the housing 3. The gears 14, 17 can be moved by the lever 21 so that (1) the drive from the engine M is transmitted only to the propeller shaft, the gears 14, 17 not being in mesh and the gear 14 connecting the sleeve 10 with the shaft 1; (2) the engine drive is transmitted only to the power take-off shaft, the gears 14, 17 being in mesh and the gear 14 not connecting the sleeve 10 with the shaft 1; (3) the engine drive is transmitted to the propeller shaft and the power take-off shaft, the gears 14, 17 being in mesh and the gear 14 connecting the sleeve 10 with the shaft 1. The front or rear end of the take-off shaft may be connected with supplemental mechanism for driving wheels of the vehicle or the power take-off shaft may be use for a winch or windlass &c.
