594,167. Change-speed gearing. WILLYSOVERLAND MOTORS, Inc. June 1, 1945, No. 13832. Convention date, June 5, 1944. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a light motor vehicle of the jeep type, in addition to a normal three-speed and reverse gear box, a transfer box is provided which transmits the drive to the rear wheels only, or to all four wheels, or to all four wheels at a lower gear ratio. The shaft 102 is driven from the normal three-speed gear box and drives gears 138, 141, the former constantly meshing a gear 150 freely mounted on shaft 145 connected to a rear differential. Drive is transmitted, with the parts in the position shown, from gear 150 to shaft 145 through an internally splined slidable gear 152, which engages splines on the outside of the boss of gear 150, and through a sleeve 154 splined externally and internally to engage the splined left-hand tubular end of the shaft 145; thus in this position the rear wheels only are driven. By sliding the gear 152 to the left to the intermediate position shown in dotted lines, the gear 152 still engages the splines on gear 150, but by contact with the balls 157 located in the splined collar 154, displaces the latter to the left until it engages the splined end 155 of the shaft 147 connected to the front differential; thus in such intermediate position of gear 152 drive is transmitted to all four wheels. By sliding the gear 152 to the extreme left it takes its drive from gear 141 and gear 150 is freed, thus driving all four wheels at a lower ratio.
