Class 34(i) A portable dehumidifier has a casing of which the cylindrical top section 1 contains a desiccant bed 5 supported between a upper screen 11 and a lower screen 8 and having a heating element 9 and the square section lower compartment 2 has an air filter 29 and a fan in a casing 17 the compartments being divided by a plate 21 having a central opening 22. An air inlet 14, outlet 28, a reactivation air inlet 34 and outlet 35 are provided with valves 37, 38, 39, 40 connected together so that in one position the passages 14, 28 are open and in the other position passages 34, 35 are open, the other pair being closed in each case and the valves being operated by a timing device. The passages 14, 28 are connected to the source of air to be dried and the moist air passes through filter 29 and fan 16 to the compartment 1 where it passes through the bed 5 and emerges from outlet 28 as dry air. After a predetermined period the timing device rocks the valves by means of a solenoid into the other position, shutting off the apparatus from the air to be dried and opening the passages 34, 35 to admit reactivation air, the heater 9 being also switched on. The reactivation air passes through the apparatus in the same direction as the air which is dried and the operation of the whole apparatus is controlled by a humidistat operated by the air to be dried. The heater 9 and bed 5 are protected from damage by overheating by a thermostat having its element near to the heater.
