Abstract
660,992. Glass manufacture. SCHULLER, W. April 20, 1949 [April 20, 1948], No. 10879/ 48. Class 56 [Also in Group V] Tubes are drawn upwardly from a bath of glass, plastic or the like, and in order to prevent the formation of small particles on the usual refractory screen, due to changes in level in the bath, and the consequent occlusion of these particles in the finished tube, the screen 3 is arranged so that its lower end is above the surface of the glass, the gap being closed by a floating ring 9 of refractory material. An air jet 11 is made entirely from highly polished heat-resisting steel, or only the upper part 14, which is formed as a shoulder to produce greater uniformity during the drawing by providing a better guide for the plastic glass, may be made of steel, the remainder of the jet being of refractory material. The screen 3 is cooled internally by means not shown and is rotated, with the drawing pot 1, by a toothed flange 4.
