Abstract
660,856. Photographic light-sensitive materials. ILFORD, Ltd. April 5, 1950 [April 11, 1949], No. 9811/49. Class 98 (ii). The quality of the images developed in photographic silver halide emulsions is improved by applying to the emulsions, e.g. by including in the emulsion, or in another layer of the photographic material, or in a developing, fixing, or other processing bath (e.g. a glazing bath) with which the material is treated, a heterocyclic compound of the general formula wherein R is H or a hydrocarbon group, e.g. an alkyl (methyl or ethyl), aralkyl (benzyl), or aryl (phenyl or naphthyl) group. The compounds may be used as free bases, as ammonium or alkali metal salts, or as substantially waterinsoluble colourless metal derivatives. More than one compound of the general formula may be used, and the compound or compounds may be used in more than one way, e.g. in both an overcoating layer and the developing solution, or in both developing and fixing solutions. Mixtures of the compounds with those of Specifications 573,745 and 583,648 may be used. In example 1, a gelatin overcoating layer containing 3-thio-5-iminourazole is applied over both silver chloride and silver bromide emulsion layers on paper supports, and the maximum densities after cold-drying and hot glazing of these materials are compared with those for similar materials having plain gelatin overcoating layers. In example 2, the maximum density for an exposed silver chloride emulsion developed in a. metol-hydroquinone developer, fixed, and hot-glazed is compared with the maximum densities of material similarly treated, but in which the developer or the fixing bath contains 3 - thio - 5 phenyliminourazole.
