Abstract

660,265. Electromagnetic switches. MAGNETON, SPOLECNOST SR.o. April 25, 1946. No. 12568/46. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sec. 91 of the Acts, April 25, 1946.] Class 38 (v). [Also in Group XXXV] In a voltage regulator of the Tirrell type, for a D.C. generator, an auxiliary magnetic circuit, excited by the generator load current causes a falling output - voltage - load current characteristic beyond a specific value of load current and an early opening of an incorporated reverse current cut-out. As shown, the shunt field M of D.C. generator D, which charges battery B, is in series, across the generator, with the resistor R. Voltage regulation is achieved through the contact assembly 6 by which the field M or the resistor R is shortcircuited. The armature 1, which operates the centre moving contact of the assembly 6 connected to the common point of R and M, is supported by the insulated leaf spring 2 and caused to vibrate by the varying magnetisation of the core 4 and the yoke 3 under the influence of coil 5 subjected to the generator output voltage. The normally closed cut-out contacts 7 are in series with current winding 9 associated with core 8 forming an auxiliary magnetic circuit with air-gap 10 and the part 3a of the yoke 3. Beyond a given value of load current, saturation is effected of the part 3a by the flux generated by coil 9 thereby causing a part of this flux to flow through the armature 1 together with and in the same sense as that generated by coil 5, thus decreasing the regulated voltage progressively with rising load current. At low generator speeds, the battery B sends a reverse current through coil 9, the fluxes due to the coils 5, 9 in the part 3a are mutually resisting and saturation of 3a again takes place causing a rise of reluctance which reduces the main flux between core 4 and the armature 1. The mutual attraction between these members is lowered to a point at which the spring 2 causes armature 1 to open contacts 7.
