660,204. Ventilating. FONE, R. F. Oct. 28, 1949 [Sept. 30, 1948], No. 25465/48. Class 137 A ventilating system for a public service vehicle comprises a perforated or slotted ceiling 11 spaced from the roof 12 of the vehicle and forming therewith an unobstructed ventilating passage which is joined by a vertical duct 14 to the inlet 15 of a fan 16 which exhausts the air through the side of the vehicle. The perforations may be blanked off as desired to obtain uniform extraction of air along the length of the vehicle. The cross-section areas of the ventilating passage, the duct 14 and the fan inlet 15 are approximately equal, and the combined area of the perforations is between two and three times greater than that. In the case of a double deck vehicle, each deck may have a ventilating passage which is connected to a fan common to both and having an inlet of correspondingly greater cross-sectional area. The perforated ceiling is secured to longitudinals 13, which, in the roof has transverse supports, are sufficiently deep to provide the necessary clearance beneath the supports, and may be of aluminium, plywood or plastic. The ceiling may be made of strips arranged longitudinally along the vehicle and joined by strips of sheet metal bent into H-form, the edges of the ceiling strips being wrapped with jointing material and inserted into the open ends of the H-section.
