Abstract
2 - Hepta-decyl - 4,6,6 - trimethyl - 1,3 - diaza-1-cyclohexene is prepared by refluxing a mixture of stearic acid 2-methyl-2,4-pentane diamine, and a trace of concentrated sulphuric acid and xylene for 116 hours at 175-195 DEG C. Sodium carbonate is added and refluxing continued for 20 hours. Residue is distilled and the cyclohexane derivative is obtained at 184-200 DEG C. at 2 mm. pressure.ALSO:A bituminous composition incorporates 0.1 to 5 per cent by weight of a tetrahydro-pyrimidine derivative wherein at least one substituent is an alkyl group having at least 10 carbon atoms. Specified derivatives are 2-heptadecyl-4,6,6-tri-methyl - 1,3 - diaza - 1 - cyclohexene, 2 - octadecyl - 6,6 - dipropyl - 1,3 - diaza - 1 - cyclohexene, 2 - carnaubyl - 4,6 - diamyl - 1,3 - diaza-1 - cyclohexene, 2 - heptadecyl - 4,5,6,6 - tetramethyl-1,3-diaza-1-cyclohexene. The alkyl group containing at least 10 carbon atoms may be decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl, ceryl or carnaubyl. The derivative may be added as such or in solution to the melted bitumen, or it may be sprayed as a priming coat on the aggregate or surface to be subsequently coated with bitumen. Bituminous materials specified are pyrogenous residues, e.g. asphaltic bitumen and pitches and natural asphaltic bitumens and tars, e.g. coal tar.
