Abstract
659,757. Harvesting tea. GORDON. J. B. Sept. 20, 1948, No. 24525. '[Classes 6(ii) and 6(iii)] A machine for harvesting tea comprises a framework 2 adapted to be supported on the shoulders of an operator. A further frame 31 is slidably mounted on the frame 2 and is provided with guides 32 which carry a table 35 on which is mounted cutting mechanism comprising a chain of knives 58 which co-operate with fixed fingers 52. The knives are driven through bevel gearing 39, 40 and a flexible shaft 29 by means of a hand-lever 15. A freewheel mechanism 12 co-operates with a chain 13 attached to a link 14 pivoted on the lever 15, a spring 20 returning the chain to its original position after each movement of the lever 15. The knives comprise a series of blades fixed on a chain engaged by two sprockets, one of which is driven by the gear 40. An impeller 50 driven from the knife gearing is provided with flexible slats 51 for clearing cut leaves from the blades. A canvas apron is provided at the rear of the table 35 and it may be formed into a loop to hold the cut leaves. A handle 67 moves the table 35 along the guides 32. In a modification a bag may be used in place of the canvas apron and the knives may cut with a reciprocating action.
