Abstract

659,390. Electromagnetic interrupters UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL CO. Dec. 30, 1949, No. 33326. Convention date, Jan. 5. [Class 38(v)] In an electromagnetic interrupter suitable for controlling flashing signals, the time of interruption is varied by varying the reluctance in a magnetic circuit that is in parallel with the armature. In the form shown the core 4 which has a central pole piece 3 and two end pole pieces 1, 2 carries two windings 8, 9 which are arranged in series and alternately short-circuited by the movement of the centrally-pivoted armature 13. This is shown diagrammatically by the switch 21. At starting, the armature occupies a position slightly off centre so that both windings are energized but the winding 9 predominates causing the armature to be attracted to the pole piece 2 and short-circuiting winding 9 so that the armature is then attracted by winding 8 to its other position whereupon winding 8 is short-circuited and so on. Short-circuited coils 7 delay the build up or decay of flux and so influence the timing which can be further influenced by adjusting the air gaps between a magnetic plate 10 and extensions of the two pole pieces 1, 2.
