Abstract
659,225. Inhalers. SIEBE, GORMAN, & CO., Ltd., and STEEL, G. C. May 23, 1949, No. 13754. [Class 81(ii)] Hand portable analgesia apparatus in which the patient inspires a mixture of air and vapour inhalant comprises a casing having air connections to a face mask and to the atmosphere and containing a supply of liquid inhalant in an ampoule wrapped in an absorbent material for absorbing the entire contents thereof and which is fractured immediately prior to use. As shown the wrapped ampoule unit 5 is placed in a casing 2 which comprises the handle of the apparatus the heat of the patient's hand causing evaporation of the liquid inhalant. Air drawn in through the holes 21 in the base of the cap member 7 and also through the annular space 16 and holes 24 in the casing wall, entrains with the inhalant vapour and passes through the disc inhalation valve 22 to the chamber 3 where it may further be mixed with air entering through the hole 25. The mixture then passes to the mask. The ampoule unit is held in the of. the patient the mixture is expelled to the atmosphere through a valve disposed in the mask. 1 via the inlet 19 and on exhalation casing 2 by a holder 6 which is rigidly secured at its base to the member 7 and is provided at its upper end with four gripping prongs 12. Holes 26a formed in the holder 6 prevent the evolution of a deliberately increased vapour concentration, which could be achieved by dipping the casing in hot water, by allowing the water to soak the ampoule wrapping thereby diluting the liquid inhalant.
