The materials may be simultaneously cut and/or embossed. The pressure may be applied over the whole of or at spaced points of the surface of the material. A press for effecting the bonding comprises a stationary platen 12, on which superposed plies of material are placed, and a movable platen 15 having a die 17 which is heated by electric elements 18, controlled by a thermostat 19. The platen 15 is mounted on a shaft 14 which slides freely in a part 13 of the press frame. The lower limit to which the platen can move, when pressure is applied, is adjusted by nuts 21 on the screwed end of the shaft 14. The platen 15 is normally held in retracted position by springs 22. Pressure is applied by a foot lever 23, which, on depression, lifts a tube 25, compressing a spring 32 mounted on a rod 26, telescoping in the tube 25. Upward movement of the rod 26 due to the action of the spring, causes downward movement of the platen through a lever 28. The pressure is controlled by adjusting the position of nuts 31 against which the spring 32 abuts. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), fluid pressure may be used, to move the platen, the pressure being controlled by a valve. A light 37 is provided to indicate to the operator the required duration of the pressing stroke. The light is controlled by a clockwork mechanism operated by a finger 36, adjustably mounted on the tube 25. Sheet material, e.g. " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark), may be placed between the heated die and the material to prevent it sticking to the die. It may be left on the material until cool, to prevent the material crinkling.
