Abstract
657,535. Automatic temperature control systems. FOSTER INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and HACKETT, C. E. April 17, 1947, No. 10214. [Class 38 (iv)] An automatic temperature control system comprises a main heater 3 and two antihunting thermocouples 7, 9 situated remote from the temperature to be controlled and associated with auxiliary heaters 8, 10, auxiliary heaters being connected in series with each other and in parallel with the main heater 3. The heaters have a common switch 4 operated by a chopper bar 5 and galvanometer 2 controlled by the thermocouple 1 so that above a predetermined temperature the switch 4 is switched off, whilst below a predetermined temperature it is switched on. The auxiliary heaters 8, 10 are connected through a step-down transformer 11 across the main heater supply, and the thermocouple 7 is connected in series with and in the same sense as the thermocouple 1. The thermocouple 7 and heater 8 have a low heat inertia thus allowing the predetermined temperature to be controlled within close limits. In order to obtain a low temperature reading however, the second auxiliary thermocouple 9 having a high heat inertia is connected in series with, but in the opposite sense to the thermocouples 7 and 1, the current delivered to the galvanometer 2 by thermocouple 9 being equal and opposite to that delivered by the thermocouple 7 when both are at the predetermined temperature.
