[Class 61(iii)] In a device for gripping pipes comprising a lever pivoted to a shoe or slipper which is adapted to be supported on the pipe, one end of a band or chain is attached to the lever or slipper near one end and this end of the lever is engaged with another part of the band or chain after the latter has been passed round the pipe and between the lever and pipe, pivotal movement of the lever causing the pipe to be gripped by the band or chain and the slipper to be forced against the pipe. The slipper comprises two plates 21, Fig. 1, connected by cross pins 22, 23, 24, the lever 27 being mounted on the pin 23 and one end of a flat link chain 25 being mounted on the pin 22. The other end of the chain is passed round the pipe and through a channel between the plates 21 and is detachably held by engagement of projections on the chain pivots 26 with slots 30 in the side cheeks 29 of the lever. In a modification, Fig. 2, a band 19 is looped round a collar 13 fixed between the ends of two cams 12 welded to the lever 10. The ends of the band are passed under an arcuate slipper 18 and between the arms 12, projecting pivot pins 15 on the lever engaging elongated slots 16 in the slipper. In both constructions the line joining the lever pivot and the centre of the pipe passes through the arcuate portion of the shoe which rests on the pipe.
