Abstract
656,442. Softening shoe-stiffeners. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Jan. 13, 1949, No. 937. Convention date, Jan. 14,1948. [Class 17(i)] '[Also in Group XXIX] A thermoplastic shoe toe stiffener assembly in a shoe is softened preparatory to lasting by directing steam on to the toe portion of the shoe upper and hot air on to the sole member to prevent the steam adversely affecting it. Steam is supplied under pressure at a temperature of about 260‹F, and the air is supplied under pressure at a higher temperature, e.g. 356 ‹F. In the form of apparatus shown of two shoe capacity, air is forced through a tube 35 by an air pump 31 to a valve assembly 36-39 of which the valve 38 is normally closed and the other open. Some of it will pass through the tube 25 and a member 18 and be discharged with considerable velocity through hot air orifices 27 against the underside of a shoe supported in an opening 116 in a casing 15. Some of the air will flow through valve 36, tube 43, boiler 32 and water 34 so that a mixture of steam and air will flow from the boiler 32, tube 44, valve 39 and tube 21 to a member 17 from which it issues through orifices 23 against the upper of the shoe. The members 17, 18 form upper and lower walls of a casing 16 within the chamber 15 and spaced from it by thick walls of heat-insulating material.
