Abstract

656,383. Vehicle suspensions. DUNLOP S. (Fiat Soc. per Azioni) Jan. 11, 1949, No. 741. [Class 108(ii)] In a suspension for front driving-steering, wheels wherein each wheel is carried by a swinging half-axle casing connected to the differential housing by a spherical joint, the half-axle casing is braced by an arm fixed thereto and pivoted to the frame, and a coil suspension spring bears on the axle casing or the arm near their juncture, the arrangement being such that each assembly comprising a half-axle casing and its bracing arm swings bodily about an inclined axis which passes through the centre of the spherical joint. The wheel 3 is carried by the axle casing 1 connected by a spherical joint with centre C to the differential housing, the half-axle 2 being connected to the differential by a cardan joint also centred on C. The axle casing 1 has rigidly connected thereto an arm 8 which .is pivoted to the, frame by a pivot 11 coaxial with the centre C of the spherical joint carrying the axle casing. A frustrum shaped coil spring 6 supports the axle casing at its junction with the arm 8 from the frame cross member 7. The cross member 7 also supports the front of the power unit. The arm 8 may extend forwardly of the axle casing 1 to provide a connection for a shock absorber 13 mounted on the frame at 14.
