Abstract
654,906. Wave-guides. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1948, No. 27071. [Class 40 (viii)] In a wave-guide system comprising a source of radio-frequency energy feeding a utilization wave-guide and a feed-back wave-guide from the output of the utilization guide to the input, the output of the R.F. source, the input of the utilization guide and the feed-back guide are connected in a wave-guide bridge including a dissipative element. The accelerating guide of a linear ion accelerator and a dissipative load are connected to conjugate arms of a wave-guide bridge, and R.F. power and energy fed back from the output of the accelerating guide are fed to the other pair of conjugate arms. The bridge may be a hydrid-T or a " rat-race," Fig. 4, with conjugate arms a, b and c, d. The impedances Z1, Z2, Zp of the sections of the rat-race are so chosen in relation to the impedances Za, Zb, Zc, Zd of the arms and the power lost in the accelerating guide that when the R.F. power is fed to arm a and the feed-back is connected to arm b the power fed to the dissipative load in arm c is zero. The feed-back path may include a phase changer so that the band width of the system depends only on the accelerating guide.
