[Class 120(ii)] A thread advancing reel comprises a series of equally-spaced bars divided into two interdigitating sets 4, 5 arranged parallel to one another substantially in the form of a cylinder, a, central fixed shaft 6, a spider 42 rotatably mounted upon the shaft 6 and comprising radial arms 43 in mutually fixed relationship on which the bars 4, 5 are movably mounted. means, e.g. a driving shaft 52 and gears 51, 48 for rotating the spider 42, two stationary cammembers 8, 9 rigidly mounted on the shaft and provided with circumferential and lateral cam surfaces, 12, 15; 19, 22; 13, 16; 21, 23 against which cam followers 26, 35; 27, 36; 31, 39; 32, 41; mounted on the bars 4. 5 respectively bear, so as to impart radial and lengthwise reciprocating movement to the bars. The spider 42 rotates on ball bearings 46 and roller bearings 47, and the bars 4, 5 move on ball bearings 44 carried by the arms 43 of the spider.
