587,949. Delivering thread. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15703. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1943. [Class 120 (ii)] A thread-storing, thread advancing reel comprises a set of spaced longitudinally-extending bars, means for rotatably mounting them about an axis, a second set of bars interdigitating with the members of the first set, and flexible and resilient means for supporting the second set of bars rotatably about an axis offset with respect to the axis of rotation of the first set. In the modification of Fig. 1, the driven concentric set of bars 2 are clamped between spacers 6, 7 by screws 8, the non-concentric bars 5 being carried by flexible and resilient spiders 17 rotating about bearings 14, 15 which have axes skew with respect to that of the shaft 9 about which the bars 2 revolve on bearings 10, 11. Skew plates 22, 23 carried by the bearings 18 bear against rods 20 which carry the bars 5 to effect the reciprocation of the same as they rotate about the shaft 9. A rubber &c. membrane 25 protects the operating parts from corrosion by the treating fluids. In the modification of Fig. 3, the bearing sleeve 14a has an outer surface whose axis is concentric and skew with respect to that of the shaft 9a. The reciprocation of the bars 5a is caused by the revolution of the skew plates 22a, 23a, which act through a ball 28a and yoke 26a, spring-urged at 29a, on the bolts 20a which carry the bars 5a, which, in this case are arranged in groups of three. In the modification of Fig. 5, the reel being of cantilever construction, the skew plate 22b, rotating about a bush 14b which is eccentric and skew with respect to the axis of the driven shaft 9b, reciprocates the bars 5b, springs 36b ensuring that the bars 5b follow the skew plate 22b. The bushing 32b carrying the spiders 17b is also eccentric. In a further modification wherein the length of the reel is great compared with its diameter, the bars 5 are carried by a plurality of flexible and resilient spiders, a plurality of skew plates effecting the reciprocation of the bars.
