Abstract
A ceramic composition comprises coal ash slag particles bound in a matrix consisting of at least 80 per cent thermally merged fly-ash. The slag comprises 1 to 80 per cent of the whole. Other materials which may be present, in small amounts, include clay, shales, fluxes, dry-strength increasing binders and anti-scumming agents. The dry strength binders include natural gums, dextrin, goulac and tall oil which are burnt out in the subsequent firing thereby increasing the absorption value of the finished material, and also inorganic materials such as sodium silicate, bentonite and highly adhesive clays, 1 to 2 per cent of the whole being present generally, though up to 20 per cent or more may be present. Substantially all carbon is removed from the fly ash if necessary in a pre-treatment before the mixture is heated to vitrefication. Other refractory material such as ground fire-brick or flint may also be included. Firing may be between 1600 DEG and 2300 DEG F.
