Abstract

A portion, particularly a sheet, of polythene is secured to a second surface, particularly canvas, by subjecting said portion to halogenating conditions to effect superficial halogenation, at least, at a surface thereof and then pressing together said surface and a second surface with adhesive therebetween. The portion may be subjected to chlorinating conditions by exposure to chlorine gas while irradiated with ultra-violet light or by treatment with chlorine in solution in a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride while irradiated with ultra-violet light. The adhesive preferably comprises a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, other ingredients of the adhesives in the examples being a cresol-formaldehyde resin, a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, a terpolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride, zinc oxide, sulphur, clay, ethyl acetate and acetone.
