Abstract
Filaments, films, bands, caps, ribbons and other articles of improved physical properties are obtained from viscose by adding to the viscose and/or to the spinning bath a small proportion (i.e. 0.5-10 milli-mols. per 100 gr. of viscose and/or bath) of a quaternary ammonium compound in which none of the four organic radicles linked to nitrogen contains more than four aliphatic carbon atoms, at least three of these radicles containing only aliphatic carbon atoms and the fourth radicle, if not purely aliphatic, containing only one benzene ring; the quaternary compound may be a hydroxide or a salt, e.g. a chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, bisulphate or acetate. The spinning bath contains sulphuric acid and zinc sulphate, preferably with sodium sulphate and with or without a sulphate of another polyvalent metal, e.g. ferrous, manganese, nickel or chromic sulphate and, to prevent incrustation of the spinnerettes, it may also contain a long-chain quaternary ammonium compound known to be useful for this purpose. Ripened or unripened viscose may be used, as well as viscose to which an alkali trithiocarbonate has been added. Specified quaternary compounds are tetramethylammonium chloride and iodide, tetraethylammonium hydroxide and bromide, tetra - (hydroxyethyl) - ammonium hydroxide, tetrabutylammonium chloride and iodide, phenyltrimethylammonium hydroxide, benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide and chloride, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide, tributylpropylammonium hydroxide, tri-(hydroxyethyl)-methylammonium hydroxide, and tributylhydroxyethylammonium iodide, and examples of the use of some of these are given. In applying the process to the production of filaments the latter are stretched during coagulation and, for this purpose, may be given a long travel of up to 250 inches through the spinning bath over a multiple-roller apparatus designed to apply a gradual tension. Preferably, however, a part or all of the stretch is applied beyond the spinning bath either in the air or in a second bath, which may consist of water or dilute sulphuric acid or may have the same relative composition as the first bath but at a greater dilution. Specification 469,817 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,347,883, 2,347,884 and 2,364,273 are referred to.
