Abstract
651,417. Regulating. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 11, 1948, No. 4059. [Classes 7(ii) and 7(vi)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] In an engine having an engine-driven centrifugal supercharger, guide vanes 18 at the inlet of the supercharger, or a stage thereof, are actuated by pressure responsive means 25 to maintain the pressure at a point between the inlet and outlet of the supercharger at a selected value for engine speeds above the lowest at which the selected value is attained. As shown, the supercharger comprises primary and secondary stages 13a, 13b delivering into the induction pipe 15, and the means 25 actuates vanes 18, 20 at the inlets of both stages. The control means 25 comprises an evacuated capsule 24 subject to the pressure in the pipe 30 and actuating the control valve 2 of a servomotor 27 controlling the vanes 18, 20 through links 28, 29, the servomotor being operated by air pressure from the pipe 15. As the engine speed increases above the value at which the intermediate pressure at 30 reaches the predetermined value, the vanes 18 are adjusted by servomotor 27 to ketep the intermediate pressure at the selected value and the vanes 20 adjusted so that the pressure in pipe 15 rises very slowly with increasing speed. A manually actuated throttle valve 16 is provided in the intake pipe 14.
