Abstract
649,571. Magnetrons. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 22, 1945, No. 31492. Convention date, June 24, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] A magnetron comprises a hollow toroidal anode 42 with its outer wall in common with the cylindrical conductive casing of the device, an annular slot 43 communicating with the space 45 within the anode. A coaxial cylindrical cathode 41 is supported by leads 28, 29 sealed through the case by metal tubes 37, 38 and glass seals 35, 36 and has shields 26, 27 supported by brackets 25 extending from the cathode. An output coupling is provided by a coaxial line whose inner 46 is sealed through the casing within the cavity 45 and a magnetic field perpendicular to the line joining the cathode to a wall of the slot is provided by the polepieces 50, 51. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a number of units, each of the form described are arranged vertically within the same evacuated space and the magnetic field is provided by a coil. In another form in which the cathode 88, Fig. 3, is actually within the slot provided between the two toroidal cavities 85, 86, the magnetic field provided by polepieces 97 is still perpendicular to the line joining the cathode to a wall 87 of the slot. By rotating the cross-section about an axis perpendicular to the one shown, another form may be produced, Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig. 6 the electrodes are arranged as in Fig. 1, but the magnetic field provided by toroidal coil 20 is circumferential, while still being perpendicular to the line joining the cathode 21 to a wall of the slot 23.
