Abstract

Styrene or a nuclear alkyl or halogen substitution product thereof is copolymerized with an aromatic petroleum residue by heating, e.g. under reflux or pressure. The residues are unsaturated products obtained by the extraction of mineral lubricating oils or crude kerosene with selective solvents, e.g. by the Edeleanu process, and are sold under the names "Dutrex," "Edmor" and "Iranolin" (Registered Trade Marks). Polymerization may be carried out in solution in xylene or dipentene, if desired in the presence of sulphur, a mono-cyclic a -terpene or a soap-forming acid, e.g. rosin. Alternatively, the soap-forming acid and also solvents, pigments and fillers may be added to the product. The reactants may be added continuously or intermittently. The products vary from viscous oils or balsams to brittle resins and may be partially soluble in petroleum ether. In an example (7), styrene, aromatic petroleum residue and rosin were refluxed for 6 hours. The product on treatment with aqueous sodium hydroxide or ammonia formed an emulsion, from which the solids deposited on drying.
